Yukon Communities Guide
The Yukon has about 20 communities accessible to visitors, ranging from Whitehorse (population ~30,000) to tiny service stops and fly-in settlements. Every major community is organized here by region and highway corridor.
Whitehorse & Surrounds
- Whitehorse — The territorial capital. All road trips start here. Full city services, museums, and the SS Klondike.
- Carcross — Small First Nations community with Emerald Lake and the Carcross Desert. 74 km south of Whitehorse.
Klondike Highway Corridor
- Carmacks — First stop north of Whitehorse. Five Finger Rapids viewpoint nearby. ~500 people.
- Mayo & Keno City (Silver Trail) — Historic silver mining towns east of Stewart Crossing. Underrated detour.
- Dawson City — The Gold Rush capital. Terminus of the Klondike Highway. ~1,900 people.
Alaska Highway — Watson Lake & Southern Yukon
- Watson Lake — The Sign Post Forest and the main southern entry point from BC. ~800 people.
- Teslin — Tlingit community on Teslin Lake. The George Johnston Museum is excellent. ~450 people.
Kluane & the Southwest
- Haines Junction — Base camp for Kluane National Park. Full services, Parks Canada visitor centre.
- Kluane National Park — UNESCO World Heritage Site — icefields, glaciers, and the highest peaks in Canada.
Northern Communities
- Old Crow — Northernmost Yukon community. Fly-in only. Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
