Dempster Highway Travel Guide: What to Know Before You Drive

The Dempster Highway is 671 km of gravel from Dawson City to Inuvik — two mountain ranges, two river ferries, one fuel stop, and some of the most spectacular scenery in North America. Here's what you need to know before you drive it.

The Dempster Highway is not a road you drive casually. It's 671 km of gravel from the Klondike Highway junction (40 km east of Dawson City) to Inuvik, Northwest Territories. It crosses two mountain ranges. It crosses two rivers by ferry in summer and ice bridge in winter. Between Dawson City and Inuvik, there is exactly one fuel stop. And it is one of the great drives in North America. This guide is the practical brief — vehicle prep, fuel strategy, ferries, weather, and what to do if things go wrong. For trip planning context and route inspiration, see the [Dempster Highway Hub](/dempster-highway). ### Vehicle Preparation You do not need a 4WD vehicle or a truck. People drive the Dempster in regular passenger cars every summer. What you need is a vehicle in good mechanical condition with no known weaknesses in the suspension, exhaust, or tires. Two full-size spare tires are not optional — they are the cost of admission. Space-savers are not adequate. A sharp rock at the wrong angle gives you a flat tire with no warning, and if you're on your second spare at km 300, you are in a genuinely difficult position. Bring two full-size spares, a working jack, and a tire iron that actually fits your lug nuts. A tire repair kit (plugs and CO2 inflators) is useful for small punctures. A tow rope, jump cables, and basic tools round out the minimal kit. A satellite communicator — a Garmin inReach or equivalent — is worth carrying north of Eagle Plains if you have any mechanical concerns. Protect your headlights with tape or a clear film. Flying gravel will chip them. ### Fuel Strategy Fuel up to full in Dawson City before you start. Eagle Plains Lodge (km 363) is the only fuel stop between Dawson City and Inuvik, 736 km north. That is not a typo — there is nothing else. Calculate your range. Most standard vehicles won't make it from Dawson City to Eagle Plains on a single tank. Carry a jerry can with enough fuel to cover the gap if your vehicle's range is under 400 km. After Eagle Plains, fuel again before continuing north. Fort McPherson (in the Northwest Territories) and Inuvik have fuel. Eagle Plains Lodge is also the only place to sleep, eat, and get help between Dawson City and Inuvik. Call ahead if you need accommodation: (867) 993-2453. ### The Ferry Crossings The Dempster has no bridges over its two major rivers. In summer, free government ferries operate across the Peel River near Fort McPherson and the Mackenzie River at Tsiigehtchic. The ferries run on schedules and can have queues in peak season — build time into your itinerary. In deep winter, ice bridges replace the ferries once the ice is strong enough (typically December or January). In fall freeze-up (roughly October–November) and spring break-up (roughly May), neither ferries nor ice bridges operate and the highway is effectively closed at these crossings. Check current highway and ferry reports from the NWT government before your trip if you're travelling in shoulder season. ### Road Conditions and Weather The Dempster in dry summer conditions is fine for any vehicle driven at appropriate speeds. At 80 km/h on dry gravel, you have reasonable control and minimal windshield damage risk. At 100+ km/h, you're asking for tire damage and cracked glass. Rain changes things quickly. Wet gravel becomes slick. Sections with clay content can become slippery enough to require very careful driving. If you hit sustained rain, slow down and give yourself more stopping distance than you think you need. Check the Yukon government road report (511yukon.ca) before you start and again each morning. Conditions can change overnight. ### Tombstone Territorial Park The first 100 km of the Dempster passes through Tombstone Territorial Park, and it is spectacular. The Tombstone Mountain massif — jagged dark granite peaks rising out of open tundra — looks like nowhere else in Canada. The interpretive centre at km 71.5 is excellent and worth stopping at even if you're not spending the night. The campground at Tombstone is reservable through the Yukon government booking system and fills up in July and August. Book early. If you're doing a minimum Dempster experience, drive to Tombstone, overnight at the campground, hike Goldensides Trail in the morning, and drive back. That's a worthwhile two-day trip from Dawson City. For a comprehensive guide to Tombstone, see the [Tombstone Territorial Park Travel Guide](/blog/tombstone-territorial-park-travel-guide). ### If Something Goes Wrong Flat tire: Change it with your first spare. Continue to Eagle Plains or back to Dawson City (depending on where you are) and get the flat repaired. Never continue with no spare tires. Vehicle breakdown: Use your satellite communicator if you have one. Eagle Plains has limited mechanical help but they know the road and can advise. The Dempster sees enough traffic in summer that another driver will pass within a reasonable time, but don't count on it in shoulder season. Medical emergency: Eagle Plains Lodge can coordinate emergency response. North of the ferries, Fort McPherson and Inuvik have medical facilities. ### Timing the Drive June through August gives you the full Dempster experience with all services running. September is the best visual window — the tundra turns in Tombstone and the northern lights are possible in the evenings. Late August through mid-September is my personal favourite window.
